What I have learned from the Amish by Mary Ellis
With the release of the first of my New Beginnings series, I realize I have learned much during my travels for research. Living in Harmony is set in Maine, where their Old Order districts differ greatly from those in Lancaster, PA or Ohio, where I live. One cannot study another person’s culture without her own life being influenced. After interviewing and then writing about the Amish in nine novels, I’ve found my life has changed. Here are five things I’ve learned from these quiet, unassuming people:
Slow down. Whether driving, talking or eating my dinner, a person enjoys the event much more if they take it easy. I once thought if I didn’t rush, I would never finish everything I needed to in a given day. That’s not true. Whoever said “haste makes waste” knew what she was talking about.
Make do with less. An Amish woman’s entire wardrobe hangs on hooks in her bedroom or can be folded neatly into one or two dresser drawers. Do I really need another pair of black heels or another summer dress? Women often buy because it’s “too good a bargain to pass up.” What a waste. I now shop with a list such as “new underwear” and won’t buy anything else, no matter how great the sale price.
Don’t compare myself to others. There is little competition in the Amish world. We will always find someone smarter/prettier/richer/more talented than us. If we dwell on them, we’ll not only make ourselves crazy, but we won’t rise to our own personal best.
Don’t over-plan life. The best opportunities come up spur-of-the-moment. If we map out our entire future (or at least try to) we’ll miss the valuable chances God drops in our path.
Trust God in all matters. As a Christian, I have witnessed His awesome power to change lives. The Amish demonstrate their faith and trust in Him each day. Although I might not be willing to give up health insurance, I’m ready to put God in charge of my life’s direction and stop swimming upstream.

Good article, Mary. Slow down: how I need to hear that. I try to pack so much into every moment of my day, it's exhausting. Thanks so much!

Even when it looks like the path ahead is blocked by a rock slide and you can't get through, if it's God's plan for you to get to the other side you can. Don't let what you perseve as an impasse block you believing you can get through(, or over, or under, and around) if it's His plan for you to get to the other side.

Nancee,
ReplyDeleteWelcome to Whispers in Purple and the BookBites column. So happy to see you here.
And thanks so much for following me on Networked Blogs. I do appreciate that.
And just last week I was reminded that God does care about the smallest things in our lives, and we can trust Him with everything. This I knew already, but just needed to hear it from the books main character, for a reminder. God is good, and He does love us and care for us.
ReplyDeleteAnd I haven't seen this book until now. I gotta have it, so I guess I will be signing up for a lot of freebies, and then purchase it if I dont win!
Thanks Mary for your wonderful stories that keep us entertained!
Blessings...Joy

We need to slow down so we can enjoy life better. Not worry so much about having things. I am satisfied with my stuff even tho it may be old. ( and need to get rid of my unneeded stuff around here. We need to have a simpler life and remember God will supply our needs, so not worry so much about things.
ReplyDeleteWould love to win one of these books. Maxie ( mac262@me.com )
I guess I have been reading quite a few books lately that are saying if the way you intended to go is blocked, that is because God has something different for you.

I read and learn that life is short, too short to have broken relationships--with anybody! Family or friends.
ReplyDeleteThanks for opportunity to win this book, it sounds to be good reading
Love Mary and her sweet spirit. Really enjoyed reading her list of things learned. Thanks, Peg, for having her!

I have learned that it isn't impossible to love those about you that are unlovable if God is living in your hear and directing your pathway.

Make do with less--I can use that tip. Sometimes we are overcome with the accumulation of stuff. Got to learn how to let it go.

First and foremost, I must say I love Mary's books and have read everyone. "Living In Harmony" sounds like another great read. I haven't been disappointed yet Mary!
ReplyDeleteThe lesson that I have learned recently from a work of fiction is, to let go and let God. Have the faith it takes to give what is bothering you all to Him. Stop fretting and stressing out about things we can not change but let God handle it. After all, we might think we need to be in control but that is so not true! Praise God he knows what is best for our life!
Blessings!

Slow down. Now that I'm retired there is no reason to be rushing here and there and getting things done in a hurry. I drove fast to get to work so I would have time to myself before starting the work day and also before the traffic came out. I drove fast after work to get things done and to get to places before heading home. Now when I drive everybody is in a hurry. I do things slowly and when I'm ready.
